About Karlijn

My name is Karlijn Smits, and I’m a certified Jay Shetty Coach.

I bring both personal and professional experience to my coaching practice. Growing up as a KOPP child—short for Children of Parents with Mental and/or Addiction Problems—I developed challenges of my own. This led me to explore Borderline Personality Disorder extensively, and I served for many years as the national coordinator of the Borderline Foundation.
One of the most valuable aspects of my work is the ability to interpret the inner world of individuals struggling with these or similar issues, while also understanding the perspective of their loved ones. Supporting both sides of that experience is something I’ve found deeply meaningful over the years, and I still consider it the most rewarding work there is.

My personal journey has brought me to a place of calm, stability, and happiness.
I also have extensive knowledge and lived experience with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. My interest and personal encounters with it pushed me to deepen my understanding and develop practical coping skills. Again, the insights gained as a family member have been just as vital as theoretical knowledge.

I believe that recognizing the emotional experience of both individuals and their families is essential in creating impactful coaching. Being able to truly see someone and empathize with how they are affected—especially as a family member of someone who may struggle with empathy, emotional availability, or mentalizing skills—can make all the difference.

This work is my passion. I approach coaching with openness, empathy, and genuine connection—never vague, always grounded.

If this resonates with you, I’d be honored to support your process.
